| Smithbridge’s civil engineering experience dates back almost 40 years to 1964 when John Smith formed John C Smith Contractors in
near Christchurch, New Zealand. The business grew to undertake bridges, pipe laying, culverts, wharves and water and sewer treatment plants.
In 1986 Albert Smith joined JCS Contractors as General Manager after working in Australia for seven years and
formed the North Island operation,
renaming the business Albert Smith Industries Ltd. In 1997 the company jointly won a contract to construct the 340m long Otira Viaduct with McConnell family interests and formed McConnell Smith Ltd. At the end of this three-year project, the Smith family regained control of the company, and its name was changed to Smithbridge New Zealand Ltd.
The New Zealand business was sold to HEB
Smithbridge Contractors in April 2003
and now trades under the HEB Smithbridge
Ltd, name with a shift in focus
to basic roading-related concrete
structures.
In 1992 Smithbridge commenced contracting in Guam, an American territory in the North Pacific and has since expanded its operations to include; heavy civil and mechanical contracting, heavy plant hire and its own quarry operation. Smithbridge Guam employs 100 staff and is now
a leading local heavy civil engineering contractor.
In 2001 Smithbridge ventured into Australia after winning a $2m wharf construction contract with BP and a $2m wharf piling subcontract for a Ports of Brisbane container wharf project. Smithbridge Australia aims to repeat the success it has enjoyed in New Zealand and Guam.
In 2004 Albert Smith moved his focus to
the management of Universal Cranes in
Brisbane which was acquired in late
2003. Subsequently, in late 2005, Paul
Brady was taken on as a 51% shareholder
and Managing Director of Smithbridge
Australia. Under this new leadership
Smithbridge Australia will continue its
focus on technically demanding civil and
marine projects.
