Group Managing Director
The founder of the Smithbridge Group, Albert has overseen at close quarters, the growth and expansion of the various business entities while maintaining close contact with the tendering and construction of all projects undertaken by the group. He founded Smithbridge Guam in 1990 and Australia in 2001 to emulate the successes achieved in New Zealand. As Director of the Smithbridge Group he contributes significantly in strategic planning as well as providing valuable technical, commercial and logistical support to the business.
The Smithbridge Group is truly a family affair. John has been a key member of the board of directors since Albert Smith Industries was formed in 1989. Prior to this, Albert worked for John for three years under the John Smith Contracting umbrella until John semi-retired in 1989. At this time, John Smith Contracting was divided into the North Island operations, which became Albert Smith Industries in 1989, and the South Island operations, which became Daniel Smith Industries in 1991. John also co-founded Smith Crane Construction with his son Tim Smith in 1994. John has devoted much of his life since official retirement to supporting all of his sons in their crane and construction ventures. This has included site management roles on many of the groups projects, procurement of machinery, planning or projects, and board level guidance of the business’.
